Learn Music

Théorie musicale / Muziektheorie / Composition

(Music Theory and Composition)

Course description:

Develop the skills and knowledge required to understand Musical Notation, Reading Music and Compositional Techniques.

Work through projects which encourage you to experiment with your ideas, to develop ideas which make musical sense and are notated in accurate ways.

Comprendre la notation musicale, la lecture de musique et les techniques de composition.

Travailler à travers des projets qui vous encouragent à expérimenter vos idées, à développer des idées qui ont un sens musical et sont notées de manière précise.

Teaching approach:

Through listening, experimenting, discussing and trying-it-out, we will help you to understand Musical Theory and/or Compositional Techniques. You will be the one who decides what we learn and when we learn it and it will be appropriate to your needs. I will facilitate your learning by offering useful guidance, stimuli and feedback to help you develop your own ideas.

Course program:

Lesson 1 - Introductory: Find out what you want to know, and what you already know. Questionnaire and feedback sheet to help shape future learning.

Lesson 2 onwards: Lesson content will be specific to your needs and your interests. We will always consult and decide on our next steps at the end of each class, so we can both prepare for the next class.

About the teacher

My name is Steven. I am a graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow, studying Music Education with specialisations in Piano, Percussion, Composition and Theory. I have been an active and performing musician for 14 years and a Teacher for 8. I am passionate about the exchange of knowledge between people and take great pride in seeing students grow and develop their abilities.

I have worked with individual students of all ages on various musical projects, enabling them to develop a wealth of skills beyond reading and playing music. I have also been employed in a State Funded School as a Classroom Music Teacher, working with young people from 5 years to 18 years old. I am also an avid knitter and crocheter, and I have enjoyed opportunities to teach these handy, therapeutic skills, too. I firmly believe in the importance of education and mental stimulation and I really look forward to working together, with you, to develop the new skills you seek! Please, do get in touch. :)

Experience

I have studied, worked and taught in Scotland for the last few years. I am a teaching graduate, working intensively over 4 years at university to understand pedagogical theory, and considering how I can use this to teach and share music.

My main subject is Music; I have in-depth and specific knowledge of Music Theory, Composition, Piano and Percussion. I have worked on a one-to-one basis with people of all ages. My youngest students have been aged 4-5 years and my eldest have been up to 60+ years.
