Literature Courses : Mexico City, Mexico

Mexico City

The oldest capital of the Americas, Mexico City is today the largest Spanish-speaking city in the world! The valley where it is located has been historically one of the most densely populated areas in Mexico, and heavy industrial concentration in the area has led to a phenomenal demographic growth over the last hundred years.

Nearly one fifth of the city's inhabitants are indigenous peoples from different regions of Mexico. On the other hand, Mexico City is also home to a large number of expatriates from North America (about 700,000 Americans live in the city), South-American countries like Argentina and Colombia, and Central America. Immigrants from Europe come notably from Spain, Germany and Switzerland, while the Middle East is mainly represented by Egypt, Lebanon and Syria. In recent years the city has also welcomed an increasing number of immigrants from China and South Korea.
