This is a classic, but youth literature like "Tintenherz" (Cornelia Funke) or "Momo" (Michael Ende) are interesting also for adults and suitable for intermediate students or motivated beginners.

As to poetry, I would warmly recommend Mascha Kaléko - she manages to write beautiful deep, touching and intelligent poems with a quite simple vocabulary. Most of them are rather short, too :)
