We benefit from including others by opening of a whole new network of people we may have ignored and we also attain an enhancement of our communication skills. Including new people into our lives, conversations or groups is an accomplishment in itself.

I would also like to share three simple steps to take if we feel we are not being included or we feel left out.

1. Look approachable

2. Mingle and talk to new people

3. Be ourselves

Step 1: Look approachable. Check body language. Smile, look open and inviting. This allows others to approach easily and talk more freely. Refrain from standing or sitting in a corner with hands closed. If introduced to someone, make eye contact and use a firm handshake to let the other person know he/she is important to you. Remember, communication is a two way process.

Step 2: Mingle and talk to new people. Do not wait to be introduced. Walk up to someone new or to a group that seems interesting. Smile, make an introduction to others; shake hands. Use first and last names and say something that is relevant to the situation or event. Ask names and use them when conversing. Include others by looking at them. Smile and turn towards new people.

Step 3: Be ourselves. Although it is important to be enthusiastic it is more essential to be ourselves. Be natural, not superficial. Ask questions of others; do not try to be the center of attention.

It is so important to always make people feel special and included. I want to challenge each one of us to ensure every time we are in a situation where a person seems to be left out of a conversation or group, we are proactive in changing that situation. Welcome him/her into the group, make him/her feel included and be aware of different personalities. It will open new opportunities for networking or making new friends and will enhance our communication skills. We will also build a more socially adept image of ourselves by taking this leadership role.
