What's the hardest part of teaching English?

(Montreal)

November 21

What is it really like to teach English? Whether online or in person, teaching English is not without challenges. We've asked our teachers what aspects of teaching English they find the most difficult.

Martin Dansky : I do not find it hard to teach the language. What can be hard is learning it! Getting the person to be perfectly fluent is hard but doable if the person applies him or herself. Usually, students reach a certain comfort level and then slack off, learning more loses its attractiveness and most often they lose incentive. So when the teacher is faced with a student who has lost this incentive, this is when the learning becomes more than challenging!

Ashley English : Getting students to realize that there is no "quick fix"....time, practice, dedication, and consistency are needed!

Dakota Smith : The hardest part of teaching English is having to change plans. Sometimes I may plan a whole lesson, but then the student comes to class with their own material to review. In other cases, I may plan a first lesson that turns out to be too easy for the student. In general, I have learned to be very flexible with my teaching material so that the time is always used efficiently and to meet the student's goals for the course.

Eleftheria Nika : Based on my experience, many students think in their mother tongue and they translate sentences in English. It takes a lot of practice to make a student think in English! A student has to be in contact with the English language on a daily basis!

Rosemary Elman : The hardest part of teaching English is timing. It's easy to over or under estimate how long something will take in class. With experience, it has become a lot easier to manage class time!

Syed Faiz Ali : Making the students believe that they can speak, write, and read like me.

Safoora Sharaf : When it comes to learning grammar that gets too confusing for non-native speakers, Using slang words formal and informal usage also makes learners overwhelmed. Phrases, idioms, and vice versa. But again I would say it depends because those difficulties and challenges can be encountered in every new language.

Bev Hotchkiss : The hardest part of teaching English is convincing my students that their language skills are better than they think :)
