a weekly 80-mins online session, 24/7 online discussion to explore topics and issues in Japanese grammar and cultures, use English for oral communication, use Japanese for other activities (written communication, written works, reading) using translators and other supports, evidence-based curriculum
As I take a flexible, student-centered approach, there will be no textbook or fixed order of topics students need to follow; they still need to complete assignments (written works and presentation) and class activities (readings, discussion participation, discussion contributions to the class), but they generally explore whatever they want to explore and go beyond boundaries students or I initially expected. Curriculum is based on evidence and educational theories.
This class is the first 4-month unit of Elementary Japanese course that runs for a year. The course is designed to build necessary skills and experiences to engage in oral and written discussions as well as complete individual / group design projects in Japanese (we will use English for oral discussions). It is appropriate for learners with no or limited knowledge of Japanese grammar and vocabulary) wishing to achieve intermediate-level of fluency for various purposes. Oral communicative skill development is heavily focused in this class although students will read and write extensively through their research and documenting their ideas.
