An interview with:

Connor Morrison

English teacher

Q:
What do you like about teaching English?
A:

I find learning languages really fascinating, and even in my own native language finding etymological connections between words and stopping to wonder "hey, why is it said in that way?" has always led me down rabbit holes. I enjoy teaching and helping others immensely to better their conversational knowledge and gain confidence in everyday language. I have two years of experience teaching mathematics and music (both of which in and of themselves are their own languages), and the smile on students' faces when they succeed always makes my day.

Q:
How is Australian English different from that of other countries?
A:

It is very similar to British English in spelling and grammatical tendencies (compared to American and Canadian English), and there tend to be a lot of colloquialisms and slang that non-native speakers may find difficult to understand ("after breakkie we'll head on down to the pool for a barbie, and in the arvo to the servo for a pack of ciggies" = "after breakfast we will go down by the pool to have a barbeque, and in the afternoon we will go to the gas station to buy a packet of cigarettes"

The famous shortening of words is always very funny to explain - servo = service station (gas station), arvo = afternoon, breakkie = breakfast, defo = definitely, bottleo = bottle shop (liquor store), Maccas = McDonalds
