What do you like about teaching English?

(Montreal)

May 25

Ever wondered what it is like to teach English? In this post we highlight some of our English teacher's insights.

Martin Dansky : I like getting students to think in the new language and learn things visually if they can as well as orally. Helping new students acquire a certain confidence when speaking and communicating in the new language is a great reward to me. Often, the student learns the language through cultural contexts, that is through comparisons of life in Montreal, Canada as opposed to elsewhere and this is rewarding too.

Elizabeth Legge : I enjoy encouraging my students as they progress and seeing their confidence build. I find this very rewarding. I know that everyone can learn to master a language! It just takes work, patience, and knowing you can do it!

Ashley English : English is a special language that has many exceptions for every rule! The combination of being a native speaker & studying foreign language pedagogy has helped me craft a teaching style that is effective & truly fun!

Lindsay Clayman : I enjoy getting a chance to work with a variety of people from different countries and backgrounds. I enjoy helping people improve their English skills, whether for professional and personal reasons, and to see their progress and the benefits of improving.

Jenny-Lyn Usher : My favourite thing about teaching English Language Learners is being part of another person's personal and professional growth. I have worked with many students who are confident in their first language, but are held back from their goals and ambitions due to these involving a second language. It feels good to support another person as they develop their skills, build confidence and achieve something that they set out to accomplish.

Maria Procaccino : Over the years, I have worked with students from many different levels of proficiency, backgrounds and countries; from teaching high school students many years ago to working with corporate executives around the world. What has always been a great satisfaction to me is when a student "gets it" and realizes they "got it"... not the verbs, not the conjugations, not the structure but get the "sense" of the language and is able to communicate effectively and clearly with coworkers and friends.

Dakota Smith : I love teaching English because I can chat and have interesting discussions with people from all over the world. I like to learn about other cultures and people, and teaching English provides an opportunity for cultural exchange as well as language learning. Additionally, I gain personal satisfaction from seeing my students learn, improve their abilities, and reach their goals. I also like to use games and interesting activites to engage my students, which also makes it more fun for me!

Eleftheria Nika : I love teaching because I get to pass my knowledge to my pupils and it's amazing seeing students progress!

Rosemary Elman : Growing up in Montreal, I was confronted with the beauty of bilingualism as a toddler, and had the privilege of learning French from a young age. I earned my college diploma in Fine Arts and spent my post-post-secondary time working in Fashion retail and E-commerce, as well as travelling. During my travels, I rediscovered my love of languages, sparking a new interest in teaching. In the past 10 years I have taught English in Spain and Germany, as well as online and in my hometown of Montreal. I have had students as young as 4 and as old as 65 years old. I know basic, conversational Spanish and

Syed Faiz Ali : I like an educated society and therefore I want to contribute my part in making it happen. At the age 15, I contributed my very first article in an international magazine on disparity in education.

Sean Legere : The truth is that I love to see people grow in any area of life, and when I can help someone do just that, I feel a great sense of satisfaction, knowing that I, in some small way, have contributed to their success. I have had the joy of seeing my students go from a basic level to now speaking with a high level of fluency, which has made a significant difference in the careers. Once again, seeing this growth makes me feel fantastic. To have students, years later, contact me and tell me how much English has helped them and how happy they now feel, is just the icing on the cake for me.

Karlota Penano : The fact that I get to meet people from all over the world excites me every time. Plus the connection I build with my students is priceless for me. Nothing is so rewarding than seeing my students use the foreign language they are learning confidently.

Safoora Sharaf : I love teaching English. I take it as a challenge to make someone understand. Pushing someone's limits towards English learning is manifests a pivotal role of a teacher. I feel better when someone achieves his learning goals with my help. That makes me feel amazing.

Bev Hotchkiss : I love language and I believe our lives are the stories we collect. I love working with non-native English language speakers as they always bring joy and a fresh way of approaching the language. I find I am learning as my students are learning. I'm a firm believer that giving is receiving and to help others as they gain confidence and a new skill is beyond rewarding.
