What are the most common motivations for learning Greek?

(Montreal)

April 29

Our Greek teachers meet many students from around the world who have many different motivations for learning the Greek language. We have asked them what are the most common reasons they have encountered.

Anna Gkini : Most of my students learn Greek because they are planning to visit Greece one day and they want to be able to get around, ask for directions, order food. They are also those that learn Greek to make a deeper connection with their spouse's origin and relatives and I find it remarkable the lengths they go in order to bond more and I am here to support it.

Marina Wedderburn : People who are interested in language origin and morphology are mostly people who want to learn Greek. Also having lived abroad people who have married a partner that is greek are interested in leaning Greek

Dimitra Vairli : I have observed that the majority of people who want to learn greek have greek origins or they have visited Greece and they felt in love with the country.

Stathis Tsiompanos : Having taught Greek to Greek primary school students, expatriates and refugees, I can say that everyone learns Greek for his/her own reasons. More specifically, Greek students learn Greek because they are obliged by the education system. They are young in age and do not understand the importance of teaching this course. Some of the expatriates who do not speak Greek decide at some point in their lives to learn the Greek language because they want to strengthen their ties with Greece, either because they are nostalgic for the birthplace of their ancestors or because they simply want to communicate.

Maria Keli : My students are * foreigners that love the Greek culture, kitchen, way of life and visit Greece every year * older Greek people that live abroad and they want to speak fluently * young people, who want to find their Greek roots * students or professors of Humanities * people with spiritual interests who are interested in reading for example the New Testament in the original text

TATIANA GALIKOU : People want to learn speaking fluently when they visit Greece for holidays.

Iliana Papathanasaki : There are many reasons for wanting to learn Greek. Here in Edmonton, my students have Greek parents (one or both). The parents want to continue their language and culture through their kids. Another reason is because of tourism. Many adults and kids want to learn Greek to communicate when they travel to Greece for holidays. Do you want to hear something interesting? A Chinese colleague of mine wanted to learn Greek sometime in his life because he knows so much about Greek philosophers, and he felt that he should be able to learn a few Greek!

Filio Alexandrou : Communication and for reading. A lot of people find Greek a beautiful language, which is true, but it is very hard to learn and understand. So I am here to make that easy.

Anastasia Ch : History and Mythology! Most people are fascinated by the Greek history.

Anna Gkini : In my experience, students are often interested in religious customs and traditions as well as Greek philosophy and geography (especially anything related to our beautiful islands). Other interests might be Greek mythology, music and of course one cannot omit the Mediterranean diet and food.

Marina Wedderburn : The greek food and the traditional music

Dimitra Vairli : They are interested in greek history and mythology.

Stathis Tsiompanos : It depends on the age group to which the students belong, but also on their personality. For example, young students simply want to be able to read and write correctly, while older students are also involved in other aspects of Greek culture such as rich Greek history and how the Greek language has been shaped over the centuries and by region. In addition, I have also worked with some students who had shown a special interest in the Greek tradition and traditional dances.

TATIANA GALIKOU : They want to learn about history, music and Greek people habbits

Iliana Papathanasaki : History and traditions! If my students are interested in these, I teach the history behind the big Greek national celebrations. My students love asking questions and discussing the various traditions all over Greece (islands, continental areas), foods, sightseeing, etc.

Anastasia Ch : Mostly the artistic side of Greece and the aesthetic of Greeks.
