What are the most common motivations for learning English?

Our English teachers meet many students from around the world who have many different motivations for learning the English language. We have asked them what are the most common reasons they have encountered.

Martin Dansky : Getting access to a job or a promotion is the most common reason but for a retired person it is usually the desire to communicate more effectively socially.

Elizabeth Legge : People tend usually to study English to improve their career prospects as English is an important universal language. Some students will also study it since they are already studying abroad or planning to do so. A few people will also study English before travelling abroad or as a hobby. Many clients also need to prepare for language level tests for work, school or immigration purposes.

Ashley English : English opens the door to so many opportunities! Mostly students want to study or work in an international context and then English is very handy. Other reasons are love, travel, culture or simply to expand their knowledge.

Lindsay Clayman : The most common reasons for wanting to learn or improve English skills are for professional or personal development. People want to take on jobs with more responsibilities and higher salaries and English is usually an important skill in these positions. Some people also like to travel and want to feel more comfortable communicating with people from other countries in a variety of situations.

Jenny-Lyn Usher : Most students start with the view that learning English is the goal and that once that is achieved, they will be better able to go for a work-related, daily needs related (e.g. communicating in an English-dominate community) or academic-related goal. However, students who have the most success see learning English as a tool to achieve an essential and motivating goal. This is a foundation on how I plan lessons; work towards the bigger goal while merging in language development.

Maria Procaccino : Speaking English is not a political statement, it's an economic necessity. We live in a global society; English is the key to entering into new worlds, new possibilities, new opportunities for everyone. However, business English is not a merely a matter of verbs, nouns, and pronouns. Business language is built of culture, idioms, and industry specific vocabulary. If you are working in the international finance industry, it's not productive for an adult to focus on literature or perhaps fine arts. I always site the example of my own experience. I was fluent in Italian and had done a maste

Dakota Smith : Most of my students want to learn English in order to expand the number of opportunities available to them. Many hope to study at a University in an English-speaking country. Several others want to better communicate with English speakers at work, typically when they work for an international company or a business that deals with international contacts. In most cases, students have learned some English, but their learning lacked speaking practice. So, the majority of my students want to improve their ability to speak English clearly and with confidence.

Eleftheria Nika : For work, travelling and personal reasons!

Rosemary Elman : In my experience, people want to learn English to travel or to further their careers and future endeavours.

Syed Faiz Ali : It's a global language, and is everywhere. It's a powerful tool that allows you the freedom of reading, writing, and traveling all across the globe.

Sean Legere : I would say that the most common reasons are related to improving one's economic possibilities. English has become essential in world business as it is the most spoken 2nd language and brings all countries together as one in business. There is another reason that I have seen for learning English, and that is a great sense of satisfaction in being able to communicate with people from practically anywhere, and the desire not to be left behind and people see others conversing in this language. Many also feel that English gives more opportunities for learning other things. The truth is that

Safoora Sharaf : 1: English is spoken internationally. 2: English is used in Business mainly. 3: English is doubly important to anyone working in an academic discipline. 4: the English language is common in Entertainment. 5: English is salient for travel. 6: This is the most common language on the internet. 7: You can find more job opportunities if you speak English. 8: You can easily travel anywhere in the world. 9: That will boost your confidence. 10: English is specifically functional in Science.

Bev Hotchkiss : From my experience, the most common reasons for wanting to learn English are career opportunities, improve academic studies, and to learn about another culture.
