How difficult is it to learn Spanish, compared to other languages?

(Montreal)

May 28

Interested in learning Spanish but the task seems daunting? We've asked our Spanish teachers their opinion about the difficulty of learning Spanish, compared to that of learning other languages.

Carlos Lenci : Spanish has many irregular verbs that cause difficulties for learners. also grammatical constructions. but the hardest thing, I think, is phonetics. use b and V> well-future. the pronunciation of nasal ñ> niña and r double rr> pero - perro. Also differentiate the use of the verbs ser and estar that in English (to be) and in French (être) there is only one verb which fulfills the function of these two verbs in Spanish.

Luis Estrada : Spanish has some difficult topics but is very close linguistically to some worldwide languages, I know there are other languages far more difficult to learn, such as German, Polish and Asian languages.

Diomedes De La Rosa : Well, I think it wouldn't fair to say that learning Spanish is easy. Spanish grammar structure is somewhat complex and maybe learning a language like English, with a different grammar structure may be easier. However, I have noticed that once my students realize that they have to learn a whole different story, they keep advancing towards reaching that goal classafter class.

Carolina Cortes Cruz : I think grammar is one of the hardest things because there are some structures that do not exist in other languages. I love to use the communicative approach to teach grammar. After having increased the vocabulary of my students, I give them the context and a specific topic where they can use what they have learned. This creates a safe environment that lets my students feel confident as they are working with the vocabulary we had learned in previous lessons and also it lets the student communicate with confidence using the new grammar structure. For me learning a new language is like knitti

Manuel Rodríguez : Spanish is not a very hard language to learn in comparison with other languages like slavic languages, German... It is easier than French, because Spanish is a very phonetic language. It does not take long to be able to start speaking in Spanish.

Jorge Sanchez : I would say, that it depends mostly on what your native language is and your own motivation to learn it. The closer your native language is to Spanish, the easier it will be. Therefore, it will be easier for a native Italian or Portuguese speaker than it would be for a Chinese speaker.

Alejandro Munoz : Spanish is very easy regarding pronunciation, anyone can pronounce Spanish well enough without much effort. I have tried to learn Russian, Czech or French, and personally it makes it difficult for me to have a correct pronunciation, it is really difficult, in my opinion. If you have a good teacher, getting a conversational level can be quite easy.
