What makes a good language student?

(Montreal)

June 13

We have asked our teachers why some language students progress faster and what makes classes with certain students more enjoyable. Want to be a good language student? Check out their responses!

Filio Alexandrou : There are no good and bad students. Just students willing to put the effort to learn.

Martin Dansky : Someone who starts off with a clean slate helps. The person needs to translate less from their language into English and vice versa and that is not easy for many people. The person has to take the time to practice what he learns and allow the new language to become predominant. Ideally he/she should continue reading, listening and writing in the new language to solidify his acquired speech.

Ashley English : A motivated student who is not afraid to make mistakes along the way. They should also be open to learning in a new way when the opportunity presents itself.

Maria Procaccino : Curiosity and desire.

Dakota Smith : A good English student asks questions! Many students are afraid to interrupt the teacher or are too shy to ask questions when they are lost or confused. A good student knows that asking questions is an important part of learning!

Eleftheria Nika : A good English student is the one that puts in the effort, asks questions and isn't affraid to make mistakes! We learn through our mistakes.

Rosemary Elman : Someone who wants to learn.

Syed Faiz Ali : The one who keeps trying and learn it a fun way.

Safoora Sharaf : Learning any new language asks for endeavor, consistency, adoption, seriousness, dedication, discipline, and commitment from the student side and trust your teacher.

Bev Hotchkiss : A good English student is someone with a vision and the flexibility and understanding to know that language learning is like a circle and not a straight line. Language learning builds off of repetition. It's like drawing a circle, then a bigger circle, and a bigger circle, filling each circle with words.

Antoine Jean-Bressani : Patience does! And, generally, a balance of focus and lightheartedness. And, of course, regular practice/study..!

Eva Boulnois : I would say a good student is someone who is motivated and understand that learning a language can take time. It's important to know why you want to learn and what your objectives are.

Carlos Lenci : From my experience as a foreign language learner, I believe that each learner has a particular way of learning. but the important thing is that basically, the apprentice has the capacity and the will to learn new subjects. Also that he has interest in new subjects and face them with desire and patience. understanding and not memorizing.Have the confidence to communicate your difficulties to the teacher so that the teacher can help you overcome them.

Eda Nur Aydın : Practicing a lot, working hard, and continuing to learn without giving up when you fail. I think a stable and hardworking learner can easily learn Turkish.

Luis Estrada : I think that depends on the person's habits, their willingness to learn and they're learning techniques. Everyone has something different they use to learn.

Diomedes De La Rosa : I would say something very simple: the desire for learning.

Manuel Rodríguez : Try to keep studing and resilient. Some days he will think: "I do not advance" But this happens in any language.

Alejandro Munoz : Be proactive in class and get the motivation to work outside of classes. Enjoy the language in class and out of the class. Proactive students improve very fast.

Ipek Terzioglu : Working harder, trying again and again, studying by all words' pronunciation and asking lots of questions.

Anna Gkini : I think the most important part is be aligned with why you want to learn Greek. Are your goals clear and how committed are you to achieve them? Of course practicing often is key but if you have a busy schedule and have less time to devote you can still progress as long as you focus during class, ask questions and do your homework. My best students are not the perfect ones but the passionate ones, because they are driven and focused and that you cannot teach.

Marina Wedderburn : Listening to the tutor and never give up after making mistakes. Be happy and keep trying! Hard work pays off.

Stathis Tsiompanos : Responsibility, of course. It is the most basic prerequisite for a successful teaching process for me.
